The purpose of this board is to share and discuss information about artificial intelligence, robotics and automation. Suggested topics include the underlying technologies, the practical applications of those technologies and the economic and cultural ramifications of those technologies. Above all else, please bring your investment ideas to the board.

Artificial intelligence, robotics and automation have already reached deep into our lives, although you might be hard pressed to point to obvious examples of its influence. Among countless other behind-the-scenes chores, neural networks power our virtual assistants, make online shopping recommendations, recognize people in our snapshots, scrutinize our banking transactions for evidence of fraud, transcribe our voice messages, and weed out hateful social-media postings. What these applications have in common is that they involve learning and operating in a constrained, predictable environment. But embedding AI more firmly into our endeavors and enterprises poses a great challenge. To get to the next level, researchers are trying to fuse AI and robotics to create an intelligence that can make decisions and control a physical body in the messy, unpredictable and unforgiving real world.

The science of artificial intelligence has gone through several "boom and bust" cycles. The term was coined in 1956 by John McCarthy, who suggested that "every aspect of learning or any other feature of intelligence can in principle be so precisely described that a machine can be made to simulate it." Cheap and abundant computing power is bringing us closer to that reality.

In November 2022, OpenAI released ChatGPT, an online chat tool that uses a technology called generative A.I. The release of ChatGPT’s chatbot, and more broadly the other chatbots and generative platforms that will follow it, are transformative technologies. Chatbots may be the killer app that does for AI what email did for the Internet.

According to Steven Levy of Wired Magazine,Generative AI is one of those hairy humongous super-shifts that will overwhelm those who ignore it. There once might have been a world where the most expedient answers came from social networks. But as quoth the raven: nevermore.”

Generative AI, as described by ChatGPT:

Generative artificial intelligence (AI) refers to a class of AI algorithms that can generate new content, such as images, music, text, or even entire virtual worlds, without explicit instructions or examples. In other words, these algorithms can learn to create new content by themselves, rather than simply copying or transforming existing data.

Generative AI typically involves the use of deep learning neural networks, which are trained on large datasets of examples and learn to capture the statistical patterns and regularities of the input data. Once trained, these networks can generate new data that follows the same statistical patterns, but with some degree of randomness or novelty.

Some examples of generative AI applications include:

-- Generative adversarial networks (GANs), which learn to generate new images by pitting two neural networks against each other.

-- Language models, such as GPT-3, which can generate new text by predicting the next word in a sentence or by completing a prompt.

-- Music generation models, which can learn to generate new melodies or even entire compositions based on existing musical styles or genres.

Generative AI has a wide range of potential applications, from creative fields such as art and music to practical applications such as data augmentation, data synthesis, and content generation for virtual and augmented reality. However, it also raises important ethical and social questions about the potential misuse of AI-generated content, as well as the impact on employment and the economy.

Please keep politics off of the board, unless the discussion is directly applicable to the technologies. No name calling or taunting please. Be civil to one another. Your mother may be watching. Trolls will not be tolerated.

Please carve out some time to read the headers for the Frank Sully moderated boards for Nvidia and Baidu. Collectively, they provide an excellent tutorial on the current state of the artificial intelligence industry.

The continuing adoption of artificial intelligence, robotics and automation will further disrupt the labor markets. Jobs will be eliminated; others will be created. The disruption will cause us to rethink our safety net. Hence, the inclusion of the Universal Basic Income board on the above list.

This board was originally created by the late John Pitera on July 4, 2017. John was a firm believer in the Singularity, I strongly recommend that you read his original header in the Revision History section.
