From: Zen Dollar Round | 6/26/2024 7:17:01 PM | | | | Did anyone else here use the iOS Dark Sky app before Apple purchased it and incorporated it into the iOS Weather app?
I was always amazed at how accurate Dark Sky was, especially the notifications like "Light rain starting at your location in 11 minutes and expected to last until 3:20PM" and similar.
It was rare when Dark Sky was off more than a minute or when precipitation didn't happen as expected. Truly one of the best apps I've ever used on iOS.
I find the Weather app is seldom correct with its similar notifications. Sort of shocking how poor it is in comparison.
I can only guess Apple uses different data sources than Dark Sky did and they're far less accurate.
The rest of the Weather app is nice, it has a nice GUI, it's easy to use, and other data seems far more reliable.
Some people have recommended apps like CARROT Weather or Ventusky to replace Dark Sky, but they have subscription fees and there's no way I'm paying that for a weather app. I hate software subscriptions. |

To: Broken_Clock who wrote (6484) | 6/26/2024 10:50:08 PM | From: Zen Dollar Round | | | For the Apple Mail issue you can try rebuilding the index for the Inbox and any other mailboxes having that issue:
Rebuild mailboxes in Mail on Mac
I had a problem late last year where I was getting hundreds of duplicates of the same email message filling up the inbox with my ISP. I thought it was a problem on their end, but turns out Apple Mail was doing the duplicating and the messages were being transferred back to my ISP since it's an IMAP email account.
The fix was to rebuild the macOS Spotlight Index:
Rebuild the Spotlight index on your Mac
Both tasks (and much more) can also be performed by the great utility OnyX that I've linked in the thread intro. It is donationware but otherwise free to use and not crippled in any way. It has many other very powerful features, so if you use it for other tasks be sure to read the help files first.
There are versions for every macOS back to OS X 10.2 (Jaguar):

Malwarebytes Labs analyzed new Mac malware masquerading as the Arc browser while targeting victims via Google ads.
‘Poseidon’ Mac stealer distributed via Google ads
On June 24, we observed a new campaign distributing a stealer targeting Mac users via malicious Google ads for the Arc browser. … The threat actor rebranded the new project ‘Poseidon’ and added a few new features such as looting VPN configurations. … Seeing campaigns distributing the new malware payload confirms that the threat is real and actively targeting new victims. |

From: greg s | 7/3/2024 12:25:19 PM | | | | I use Apple email to access my Microsoft email accounts (msn and hotmail) on my MacBook, iPhone and iPad. I have been getting prompts for a while that Apple mail cannot access one account or another. I can usually enter my account name and password to fix the issue. Other times I cannot but the problem seems to "go away".
I now know why. Microsoft is moving to "modern authentication" from "basic authentication" for their email systems. If you use a version of Microsoft mail, you may have received an email from them stating that the change will go in effect September 16. However, research revealed the "cannot access account" problem is a known issue at Microsoft.
I found an article from Microsoft covering the issue and upcoming change in September. It also offers guides on what needs to be done. I offer this for the board to review. If you are like me, I would rather deal with this now than when my accounts no longer work on September 16.

I have a Hotmail account but haven't used it in many years, and the only email accounts I use with Apple Mail are an IMAP business account and a seldom used iCloud one.
I use the Airmail app for my Gmail accounts on both iOS and my Mac. |

From: Zen Dollar Round | 7/15/2024 6:46:58 PM | | | | Apple public beta testing: macOS 15, iOS 18, et al
Apple’s Beta Software Program solicits voluntary assistance for the company’s software development efforts from people willing to “enroll their devices” and help the company debug (“beta-test”) major upcoming software changes. Apple’s Beta Software FAQ describes the details, and participation is subject to Apple’s various “terms and conditions.”
The Apple Beta Software Program lets users try out pre-release software. The feedback you provide on quality and usability helps us identify issues, fix them, and make Apple software even better. Please note that since the public beta software has not yet been commercially released by Apple, it may contain errors or inaccuracies and may not function as well as commercially released software. Be sure to back up your iPhone or iPad and your Mac using Time Machine before installing beta software. Since Apple TV and HomePod mini data and purchases are stored in the cloud, there’s no need to back up your Apple TV or HomePod mini. Install the beta software only on non-production devices that are not business critical. We strongly recommend installing on a secondary system or device, or on a secondary partition on your Mac. … The Apple Beta Software Program is open to anyone with a valid Apple ID who accepts the Apple Beta Software Program Agreement during the sign-up process. Do you have one of those rubber jar lid openers, or any kind of rubber mat you could lay the AirTag on while you press down with two fingers to turn the battery cover? If the surface is sticky enough it should hold the AirTag and make turning the cover easier.
If that doesn't work, ask a friend or family member to help you. |
