Detroit did win. When Carolyn first calculated the standings, she mistakenly credited New Orleans with the victory.

Happy New Year. I am about to settle down for a full day of college football. I hate the fact that the national championship will not be decided today. I was under the mistaken impression that this issue was addressed by the Founding Fathers in the Constitution. I don't want to have to remember to watch the championship game, which by the way, could be one hell of a game. Whoever extended the college schedule should be shot. Had Kerry made this a campaign issue in 2004, I might have voted for the bastard.

Actually I think the National Championship should be played Jan 1st in the evening AFTER all other college games are played. Everything relating to college football should have ended yesterday. This Wednesday thing totally blows!

We’re on the same page. They should have played the game last night. The NFL should have played all of their games on Saturday.

Agreed

The Packers are having a 10:30 press conference - I wonder if this spells the end of Sherman?

[edit]

I think we should let Sherman go and hire Mooch. Retain our offensive line coach and our defensive coach

I think you'll get your wish with Mooch as the new head coach.

I'm surprised that Sherman lasted this long. They should of fired his ass after the Pack/Eagles playoff debacle in the 2003 season

As I listened to the Ted Thompson press conference I was left with the impression that Favre wouldn't factor into his decision at all.

If that turns out to be true then hiring a coach with "west coast" offense experience isn't a must which means Favre will basically be forced to retire. What that does for Ted Thompson is allow him to sink or swim with a team of his choosing. Every GM (since their neck is on the line) wants the right to determine his fate and thats fair.

On the other hand - pushing Favre into retirement will not be a "fan favorite" move. When you have to lead a team you shouldn't worry about the fans BUT if he pushes Favre into retirement with his coaching choice Thompson will be shortening his own leash if things don't work out fast enough.

That brings guys like Mooch, Childress, Holmgren, Haslet etc. back into the picture. If Thompson wants to keep Favre around for another couple years it will take a west coast guy that Favre knows. This is where my heart may make my focus a little blurred.

In my opinion Favre (assuming the unthinkable doesn't happen - tragedy, wife's cancer comes back or career ending injury) is still a top 5 QB if he has some supporting cast around him. I really believe he has 3 more years left in him. Because I believe that I would sit down with Favre and lay the cards out. I'd tell him that we want him around BUT this year in and year out Favre retirement watch was killing the team. We have to make decisions based on the future which goes beyond 1 year. So I'd ask him to commit to 3 years assuming the unthinkable doesn't happen. The other out would be if we won a super bowl and Favre wanted to go out on top.

If Favre wouldn't commit to 2-3 more years then I'd hire the coach of my choosing if I were Thompson and it may not be any of the above candidates. I think Jeff Fischer is underrated and could possibly become available. I also think Kubiak (OC) at Denver is a candidate. The problem is this puts us in a waiting game until the playoffs end. I would NOT hire from the college ranks.

The Packers coaching job has had too many changes. Because of the teams history I view the Green Bay job as the Michigan or Notre Dame job of the NFL. Turnover should be low and the quality of coaches it attracts should be very high. Longevity would be a HUGE factor in hiring for me which is why I'd be looking at guys like Mooch. I want a guy like Bill Cowher that sticks around and produces a good quality product almost every season. I don't know that Mooch can do that BUT I don't view Detroit as his fault. Millen sucks! Millen drafted that team - not Mooch. I thought what Mooch did in San Fran was remarkable based on their talent. He's young and he views the GB job as the pearl of the NFL. If hired he could possibly become a long term coach in Green Bay AND could bring Favre back into the fold for another few years. Whether this matters to Thompson is of some question after hearing his press conference.

My vision of the Packers is that we stay with the west coast offense and bring in a young guy that will stay for 15 years as coach. I'd want to keep Favre for another 3 years and I'd trade down in this years draft to get some depth picks. There isn't a guy worth a number 5 pick after Leinart and Bush are gone. My first round pick(s) would be defensive which would be followed by a RB in the 2nd round. The remaining picks would be defensive and then some Big Ten offensive linemen in rounds 5-7. I'd let Ahman Green go and I'd ask KGB to take a cut in pay. I'd keep Aaron Kampman and look to free agency for a WR, LB and possibly a safety. We should have some solid compensatory picks from lost FA's last year so we can probably get some good depth in the 2nd - 4th rounds if we don't screw the goose on draft picks. One of the things I would be looking for on defense is drafting kids with a motor. This nice guy brand of tackle football up here is bull shit. Clean is fine but I want some guys on defense that are clean undertakers. I want our defense to be feared - like the Ravens. I want WR's from other teams to gator-paw the ball because they fear the gurney that awaits them if they extend. I want our offensive linemen to play in short sleeves no matter what the temp is. I want them to be the kind of guys that you could drop off in the wilderness and they'd eat the raw meat of the animals they killed. Basically what I want is the same offense we've had in years past and the defensive intensity the Bears currently play with. Fear and pain MUST be brought back to the defense and Favre & the offense must be the lance that slices through flesh with precision
