When I was a teenager working as a pump jockey at a Texaco station, gasoline was less than 0.29 cents a (US) gallon. I pumped your gas, washed your windshield, checked your oil level and tire pressure and gave you S&H Green Stamps with your change (boss hated that). Free road map, too, if you asked for one. :-)

Times have changed, although you can still get a free air check at most big tire stores here in the States..

Heck I remember when Pay-less gas was selling gasoline for 23 cents a gallon - ( or 6 cents a litre) - we would collect a case of empty beer bottles, cash them in and get a gallon of gas. We could do road trips on cashing in beer and pop bottles.

Thats a little before my time, I got my drivers license in around 1977. I remember 29 cents from a gas station that is no longer there, this was in 1980. I vividly remember the price from some strange reason.

I wanted a 55 -57 Nomad - my dad would not get out of his chair to come look at any, Also found a 32 ford pickup, X show truck with a flathead - same thing he would not look at it - basically insisted on the falcon. A year after that I rented my own garage and started building a hot rod without my parents knowledge. That little garage became a stop spot for bikers and cops..... and boy was I green.

Cops, our body shop was buzzing with cops drinking coffee and telling cop stories, I had a ride along with one of them.

For the most part cops were just looking for deals on repairs.

The cops had these huge thermoses of coffee, the bikers would drink beer - I had a cooler that pretty much remained full. Might have happened a couple of times a week when they would drop buy - for the cops I think it was a quiet place to sit back for 15 minutes, for the bikers I had a knack at gas welding, I was fringe and made a point of staying that way. Lots of stories over the years I had the garage, I think I had it 3 years before my parents clued in. Like I said - I was green - still am in many respects;)
