See if you can find a store that can convert old analog A/V sources, like your tapes, to a digital format. A few years ago I found a shop that copied my mother's old (very old) 8mm home movie films to DVDs. Didn't cost a whole lot.. Also, if you do buy a player, you can always resell it after you're done with it..

I had Hi8 tapes digitized for 20 bucks for first and 10 each afterwards, just 3 of them. They came to my house pick up and delivery.
